Exploring the Great Outdoors & Learning the Rich History of Crockett Hills Regional Park

There’s a lot to know and love about Crockett Hills Regional Park and we’d like to fill you in on some of the specific details. For starters, you are allowed to bring your dogs into the park at any time during their gate hours and you can do so without having to pay a fee. The same holds true for parking since they do not require visitors to pay anything to park at the facility.

The park has instituted a curfew that begins at 10 PM at night and ends at 5 AM, but the specific gate hours are as follows: November through February 8 AM to 5 PM, March 8 AM to 6 PM, April 8 AM to 7 PM, May through August 8 AM to 8 PM, September 8 AM to 7 PM, and October 8 AM to 6 PM. So those are the official visiting hours while the park is open, although you are allowed to walk through the park during other hours as long as it isn’t during the curfew time.

This regional park is located right outside of the town of Crockett, CA. It consists of 1939 acres of land and originally it’s believed that Native Americans used this as a gathering and hunting ground before it became a ranchlands during the 19th century.

A more recent note, this park is specifically connected to industry in the region in recent years. It started out as a milk house and ranch barn with many corrals which you can still see if you visit the picnic and staging area of Crockett Ranch because it’s available for visitors even to this very day. The park itself has many different elevations that range from 150 to 800 feet, which is interesting because you are capable of getting an amazing view of Mount Diablo, Mount Tamalpais, the Delta, and San Pablo Bay. There are also wonderful hiking trails, and in particular the Bay Area Ridge Trail is 4.5 miles of natural beauty.

Overall, the typical topography of the park is quite beautiful to say the least. There are wooded ravines, a river shoreline, rolling grasslands, open spaces, and even eucalyptus shaded meadows. You can see beautiful views from rich top vistas and you’ll even have access to amazing canyons while walking, hiking, biking, or horseback riding on the trails.

The Many Features of Crockett Hills Regional Park

As you are about to learn, there are a wide range of wonderful features that make this park so appealing to many. Not only is there beautiful wildlife, there’s also lots of vegetation, gorgeous trails, and so much more.

As far as vegetation is concerned, there is a number of different plant communities located in this region. It is made up of oak woodlands, grasslands, and even coastal scrub vegetation. You can find Bay Woodland, Oak, and even Buckeye which is located in the protected areas of the ravines and slopes.

As far as wildlife is concerned, this is a wonderful habitat for many different birds and other animals. Along the trails, you’ll be able to discover so many beautiful creatures including the Golden Eagle, American Kestrel, Red Tailed Hawk, American Goldfinch, Western Bluebird, Horned Lark, House Finch, Barn Owls, Horned Owls, and many other wonderful birds.

Other mammals easily discoverable on the trails include gophers, eastern fox squirrels, grey foxes, mule deer, and raccoons. You’ll also see sharp tailed snakes, western garter snakes, and gopher snakes while hiking as well.

Activities to Appreciate in Crockett Hills Regional Park

We have eluded to this a number of times, but there are plenty of wonderful activities to participate in while visiting the park. You can go hiking, biking, horseback riding, dog walking, or running along many of the wonderful trails. There are so many things going on in this area that it’s hard to keep track of them all and it’s often filled with lots of people, wildlife, and there’s so much nature to enjoy, experience, and appreciate.

Let’s not forget about the Crockett Ranch Staging Area as well. If you feel like stopping by at any time during your visit, there are picnic tables for you and your family and friends to sit down and enjoy a bite to eat while hiking and biking the trails.
