Thanks to a partnership between Divco West and Ellis Partners LLC, along with the direction of Jack London Square Ventures, this port location has received a $375 million makeover. Class A office space and community amenities ranging from retail to public gathering spots breathe new life into this estuary.

On any given Wednesday, you can find people taking a stroll or running along the waterfront walkways. Picnics are enjoyed in the small park-like areas, meals are consumed in cultural and fine dining establishments, and drinks flow from the local cocktail bars. Goods and services are purchased up and down the streets while others simply sit by the bay to soak in the fresh air and sunshine.

If you want to do something a little different during the week, then Wednesdays on the Waterfront is the place to be. This event is more than just a social gathering spot though.

Raffles and Prizes

During the months of July, August, and September, you can bring in a receipt from any restaurant or retailer in Jack London Square for a chance to win one of several grand prizes. Your receipts allow you to enter your name in the drawing, and the prizes are huge. This past year’s included wine tasting passes for Rosenblum Cellars, theater tickets to Cirque du Soleil, and an Alaska Airlines ticket worth $1,400.

Receipts are accepted at the offices on 472 Water Street anytime between 9am-5pm. If you can’t deliver your receipts in person, you can email them via the address found on the Visit Oakland event page. Also, lunch receipts count as a double entry.

Stores, Food, and More

There’s plenty to do while visiting Jack London Square. Now that the area has been revitalized, this port community is more vibrant than ever. Across from the Chinese Garden Park, you’ll find plenty of shopping and dining opportunities.

Start your day off right with the ever-popular Blue Bottle Coffee, then hit up Yoshi’s Oakland for delicious sushi and live Jazz music. Urban Legend offers exquisite wine tastings, while the Chop Bar delivers a rustic chic atmosphere with cocktails and beers. Check out Kincaid’s Fish, Chop & Steak House for the finest cuts of meat and select fresh caught fish, or head over to Scott’s Seafood Grill & Bar for the best fish dishes in the East Bay.

Wednesdays at the Waterfront also offers a vast selection of food trucks and street side vendors, which is constantly changing. You can even find a few farmers markets featuring their seasonal harvest. Half the fun is seeing which local business attend. Before leaving the area, though, beer enthusiasts should stop into Beer Revolution to try one of their 50 taps of rotating craft selections.

There’s no cost for admission, but you might need to pay for parking depending on availability. Of course, you could always take any of Oakland’s public transportation options or an Uber to save yourself the hassle. Plus, those options come in handy if you plan to drink.
