Berkeley is Officially California’s Best Suburb of 2019

Everyone has their favorite California neighborhood, but few agree on which is the best of the best. Well, the debate is over (for 2019, at least). Niche recently released their “Best Places to Live” ranking, which covers all of America, naming Berkeley as one the best in country with an A+ grade. If you’ve ever considered moving into the Berkeley apartment rentals, then now is the time. Here’s how this vibrant neighborhood earned its status.

The List

To better understand how Berkeley earned its A+ rating, it helps to know how Niche creates their lists. They look at cities, city neighborhoods, and suburbs across America, excluding rural towns and areas where the population is 1,000 or less. Niche then creates separate rankings for each category. So, there’s a top city, a number one city neighborhood, and a different list of top-rated suburbs.

Once they’ve rounded up every area of its type, Niche then takes several factors into consideration. The criteria include:

  • Quality of public schools
  • Crime ratings and safety
  • Quality of housing
  • Variety and quality of nightlife
  • How suited the area is for families
  • The diversity within the area
  • General health and fitness levels as well as opportunities
  • What the commute is like
  • What the cost of living is
  • Quality and number of outdoor activities
  • Year-round weather
  • And the availability of jobs in the area

To earn a spot on the “Best Places to Live” ranking, areas need to get as high of a score as possible. Each aspect is rated from A to F with plus and minus grades to help differentiate their aspects even further. Niche creates several of these lists, including one for each state and an overall for America.

Where Berkeley Stands

Berkeley secured first place on the Top 10 Best Suburbs in California list. Hot on its trails are Santa Monica and Albany. While it didn’t make the Best Place to Live in America list, that’s quite an accomplishment. Berkeley has secured its spot as the number one suburb in the state for all of 2019.

How did the neighborhood earn this spot, though? With stellar ratings in critical areas. Berkeley brought home an A+ for its public school system, providing premier education to the children that live there. Commuting from the suburb, outdoor activities, and weather also received an A+ status. Combine that with two more A+ ratings for diversity and health/fitness, and its easy to see how it received one more top-tier ranking as a family destination. Tally those up, and Berkeley scored eight A+ ratings.

Jobs in the area received a B, while the housing scored a C. Crime and safety also came in at a C, with cost of living scoring the lowest grade of D. This is California, so the cost of living and housing makes sense.

While it wasn’t a straight A report card, there’s even more good news. The suburb followed up its stellar health and fitness score by ranking number one on the Healthiest Cities in America list. Taking key statistics from millions of resident reviews and the U.S. Department of Education, Niche deemed Berkeley the healthiest out of any place to live in the country.

The suburb has one more mention, too. It ranked number three on the Best Cities to Live in America list as well. That’s an amazing year for Berkeley, and incredible news for the people who live here.
