Memorial Day in Oakland 2019
How to Spend Memorial Day in Oakland This Year
We’re deep into May, which means that Memorial Day Weekend will soon be coming to the Oakland apartments, and you’re going to need a little something to do if you haven’t made your plans already! Thankfully, the Bay Area is filled with fun things to do, and the East Bay in particular has some phenomenal events planned for the days leading up to (and right on) Memorial Day. Today, we’ll be covering a few of the best options, to give you an idea of where to go and what to do to celebrate the holiday.
2019 Memorial Day Events in Oakland
The East Bay is a big place, which means there’s a lot going on that might catch your interest. We’ve taken the trouble of doing a bit of legwork for you, and have narrowed down a few intriguing options below.
Trap Waves Memorial Day Weekend Cruise
Let’s start our listing off on the water, shall we? The Trap Waves Memorial Day Weekend Cruise, taking place May 24th, will offer up what might be the best “music on a cruise” experience you can find if you’re into Trap, Hip Hop, and DJ stylings, with big name tunes from artists like the Migos, Cardi B, Drake, and Future all on the expansive playlist. This 3-hour cruise will be hitting the water out of Jack London Square in Oakland, and during this excursion you’ll get to travel all the way from the Bay Bridge to McCovey Cove in San Francisco and back. Expect a lively time, as the yacht will also include two fully-stocked bars and two separate levels jam-packed with revelers and quality entertainment.
Afro Sundaze International Day Party
If you’re looking for more of a day party vibe to your Memorial Day Weekend, you might instead want to check out the Afro Sundaze event taking place at the Parliament Event Venue on May 26th from 3:00PM to 8:00PM. This event, hosted by Kola, will include an eclectic mix of sounds ranging from Latin to Afrobeat and Hip Hop vibes, with featured musical entertainment from Djayslin & Friends. Along with the great music, you’ll also get a taste of some delectable African food courtesy of Chef C.
The Summer Squeeze at SPARK Social SF
Shifting gears just a bit, you might be interested in an a beer and sangria-fueled picnic, right on Mission Bay Boulevard in San Francisco? The Summer Squeeze will be the event for you, in this case, as it offers attendees a choice of “8 juicy, fruit-infused craft brews and 8 seasonal house-made sangrias” from their bottomless bar, along with 12 of SPARK’s food trucks to supply the eats for this outdoor extravaganza. This affair, which takes place on May 26th from 11:00AM to 3:00PM, will also feature live DJ music, a plethora of lawn games to play, and not one, but two contests, in the form of the Watermelon-eating and limbo competitions. Consider getting a VIP ticket for this one, so you can enjoy the fun from the comfort of your own cabana.
Watch the Oakland A’s Take On the LA Angels
Few things say “Memorial Day” quite like a good game of Major League Baseball, and on the 27th, you’ll have a chance to see the Oakland Athletics take on the Los Angeles Angels over at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. Expect all the usual trappings of a holiday baseball game (complete with sodas, pretzels, and beer), along with a lively crowd that’s ready to support the home team. Who knows? Maybe the A’s can pull out a win and really make Memorial Day special this year!
Afro Soca Love: Oakland Outdoor Festival
For the festival/block party vibe, you’ll want to take a look at the “largest multicultural celebration of LOVE in North America,” Afro Soca Love. The theme, as you might have guessed, is indeed “love,” though this time, with a distinct Afro-Caribbean twist. Performers, vendors, and plentiful drinks will be in ample supply at this street festival on May 27th, and the fun will be carrying on from 12:00PM all the way until 7:00PM.
151st Anniversary Memorial Day Commemoration & Parade
The 151st Anniversary Memorial Day Commemoration & Parade at the Presidio will be a great way to show some love to America’s valiant veterans on Memorial Day, and this mid-day event in particular will be taking the time to “honor the one million Americans killed while serving in the U.S. armed forces and will connect the public to the commitment and sacrifices made by military personnel, veterans, and their families.” After the parade and 21-gun salute, there will be a rather sizable community picnic, where you can bring your own grub to chow down on, or enjoy some of the food for purchase on the grounds.
Bachata Takeover: Kick-Off Memorial Day Weekend
There’s something about a good Bachata Takeover that’s electric, isn’t there? The exciting atmosphere, the booming sounds, and, of course, the dancing all come together to create an experience quite unlike your run-of-the-mill party. On May 24th, they’ll be “taking over” Club BNB on Broadway in Oakland, and have the chance to enjoy some of those infectious DJ sounds, along with Bachata classes courtesy of Jhonatan and Daniela. There will also be a lineup of live performances for you to enjoy, so get ready for a start to Memorial Day Weekend that will be one for the ages. Just remember you’ll need to be 21 or older for this one!
