With an event this huge, all you have to do is walk outside any of the Oakland apartment rentals to participate.

What is the Art and Soul Festival?

The Art and Soul Festival is Oakland’s way of celebrating creativity, pride, style, and spirit. The event takes place every year, drawing in artists from across the neighborhood to celebrate Oakland’s diverse, culturally exciting, and rich music heritage.

Crowd favorites and new activities make this weekend on of the most exciting in the Oakland area. It isn’t just about the music, either. Artists and artisans of all sorts line the streets to offer residents the ultimate celebration of this neighborhood’s artistic nature.

Dates, Times, and Ticket Prices

This year’s Art and Soul Festival takes place on July 27th to the 28th. Both weekend days last from noon to 6 p.m. with a jam-packed list of events and shows. To find out which day and times you’re most interested in, check out this program guide.

Ticket prices vary depending on age and whether you choose to purchase in advance or at the gate. Prices at the gate are $15 for adults and $9 for seniors on each day. Anyone ages 18 and under receive free admission. Seniors are considered 65 and older for this event.

Presale prices are as follows, but keep in mind there is a convenience fee for online purchases:

  • One Day Pass for adults - $12
  • Two Day Pass for adults - $18
  • One Day Pass for seniors - $6
  • Two Day Pass for seniors - $9

You can enter the festival via one of three ways. First, there’s an entrance located on 14th Street and Broadway. The second is on Clay Street and 11th Street. Finally, there’s the Promenade beside the City Center West Garage, which is between 12th and 14th streets off of Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

What to Expect

This year’s lineup of artists, activities, and events is fully loaded. Saturday’s main stage is hosted by Steven Parker of KBLX 102.9 FM and features SOL Development, the Alphabet Rockers, Agape Soul, and 2009 Grammy winner Estelle.

The Clay Street stage features a gospel showcase with acts like MySunn Turner and Doris Bumpus, presented by Community of Unity and hosted by both Armand Carr of KBL and Pastor Botiwa Jackson. Meanwhile, the Plaza Stage hosts a turf dance battle presented by Yak to the Bay Turf with premilinaries kicking off at 12:30 p.m.

Emerging artists are featured at 12th and Clay with the lineup to be announced, while the Kinetic stage on 14th and Jefferson will feature acrobatic circus acts. Finally, a parade with Samba Funk will flow through the streets at 3 p.m.

Sunday’s lineup features the West Blues Society Showcase on the main stage, which includes various acts alongside locally famous Oakland Blues Divas. Two-time Grammy winner and Oakland local Fantastic Negrito will also perform on the main stage at 4:30 p.m. All main acts are hosted by Sterling James of KBLX 102.9 FM.

The Clay Street stage features Heaviest Feather, Bay Revue, and the Jazz Mafia Choral Syndicate. Sunday’s Plaza Stage, presented by Dance-a-Vision, includes a lineup of urban and world dance styles. Emerging artist remain at 12th and Clay on Sunday, with the array of circus acts continuing on 14th and Jefferson. The Street Sounds parade makes a second appearance as well, with artists to be announced.

Delicious Eats and Drinks

Next to the various performing artists, the Art and Soul Festival’s food is what draws the crowd in. Eventgoers have an incredible lineup of cuisines from around the world to choose from. Vendors offer more than this article feature, but here are some top dishes to look forward to:

  • Crawfish Etouffee
  • Ethiopian delights
  • Chicken Tikka Masala with veggie pakoras
  • Your choice of pork, chicken, or veggie lumpia
  • Hawaiian BBQ and malasadas
  • Tri-tip and sausage sandwiches
  • Smoked turkey legs
  • Jerked chicken
  • Funnel cakes
  • Jambalaya and gumbo
  • Catfish, snapper, oysters, crab cakes, and shrimp
  • Hushpuppies with remoulade sauce

Vendors also offer plenty of beer, wines, and spirits to pair with your selections. The event sticks with a green initiative, as well, by making all cups, plates, and utensils compostable. So, you don’t have to worry about adding to the ocean’s trash. Side note: while you can order all sorts of liquors, Effen Vodka is a sponsor of the Art and Soul Festival. You’ll have a hard time finding a vendor without Effen at the ready.
