Fun Things To Do On A Friday Night

What are you doing this Friday? It’s the classic phrase that most of us have heard since our college days, and regardless of where you live, there’s a good chance you’ve been floating that question to yourself or some friends in the hopes you can find something fun to do. If you happen to be a resident of the apartment rentals in Manhattan, then you should already know that there are plenty of things to do around the city, and on Friday nights the choices are just as robust as any other time of week. If you’re stuck trying to think of options, though, read on as we explore some of the best in town.

Yes, You Can Still Go To Bar

Some might see it as passé, but there’s no denying that New York City is a metropolis with more than its fair share of beverage-serving establishments, and they serve as a locus of activity that you can center a Friday-night outing around. If you want to hit up a bar, make sure it’s a good one (any number of bar listings can clue you in on what’s suitable), and make sure you adhere to some proper, Friday-night bar etiquette to ensure your evening goes off without a hitch.

Now, while no one is denying that the bar can still serve as good fun, you’ll have to admit that for a Friday-night, it’s more than a bit formulaic. If you want to mix things up, you’ll need to think outside of the box. Lucky for you, we’ve got some suggestions to get your brainstorming session off on the right foot. Instead of just heading out for a drink, why don’t you try…

A Trip To The Museum

If you’ve ever been to the Rubin Museum Of Art, then you might already know that it’s filled with paintings, statues, textiles, and other fine works from Tibet and other Himalayan countries. Through “thought-provoking exhibitions and programs,” of which they cite films, concerts, and on-stage conversations, the museum is set on changing the way people view the world. They’re also set on making sure you have a great time, as the museum transforms into a lounge space:

“Café Serai becomes the K2 Lounge, offering a special pan-Asian cuisine menu to accompany the evening's DJ and programs. Happy Hour runs from 6:00–7:00 p.m. with a 2-for-1 special on select beer, wine, and well drinks.”

You’ll be able to enjoy the museum’s “celebrated music series,” which includes both Naked Soul and Jazz At The Rubin, get in on a guided tour for the purposes of “exploration and conversation,” or check out a so-called classic movie along with your drink. Which brings up another great Friday night favorite from the museum, Cabaret Cinema:

“Curated by Rubin Museum fellow and neuroscientist David Eagleman, Cabaret Cinema delves into the mysteries of time. Aside from their listed duration, movies often carry us through periods far beyond the minutes that pass as we sit in a theater.”

In other words, you’ll have a chance to get together to watch some weird movies. The upcoming series includes:

2001: A Space Odyssey Back To The Future The Time Machine Run Lola Run Groundhog Day Time After Time Time Bandits The Fountain Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure Memento Donnie Darko

A great opportunity to get out in a non-bar setting, but far from the only one in town. If the museum isn’t your thing, you might instead want to…

Catch A Movie You’ve Never Seen Before

While the museum is screening good, but still old movies that you might have already checked out, Cinemas 1, 2 & 3 will be screening first-run indie and foreign films. You can head over here on 3rd Avenue to check out something you’ve never seen before, all in a newly-renovated space that includes 2K digital projectors and leather reclining seats.

Alternatively, you could head over to the Upper East Side’s neighborhood-favorite theater, The Beekman Theater, to check out any of the films playing on their two digital projection screens. Sure, you won’t get the reclining seats here, but you will get to enjoy some of those old-school concessions and the unbeatable vibe of a local movie house. If you’d prefer not to sit around, though, you might instead like to...

Have An Adventure

New York Adventure Club lists three tenets that play into how they adventure:

Discover the hidden gems around NYC & beyond. Explore the unknown stories of everyday places. Learn from experts who define urban culture.

In furthering those goals, they’ve always got some nifty events going on, like the Late Night Print Shop Tour:

“Sip some wine, roll up your sleeves, and get ready to learn how to operate antique printing presses in one of New York's most famous (and hidden) art centers, known as the epicenter of NYC’s underground book arts community.”

Or The Mount Vernon Hotel Murder Mystery:

“Join New York Adventure Club for a murder mystery experience at the historic Mount Vernon Hotel Museum, a former day hotel in the Upper East Side that was once a country escape for New Yorkers living in the crowded city at the southern tip of Manhattan during the 19th century.”

The offerings presented by NY Adventure club are always fun, always out of the ordinary, and quite thrilling to boot. Be sure to check out what they have going on from time to time and treat yourself to something new and exciting on a Friday evening. Speaking of which…
